How to Cook Shrimp with a Wok

A wok is designed to cook food quickly and evenly. That’s why it is ideal for preparing stir-fry dishes that are ready in less than 20 minutes as well as perfectly cooked shrimp.

How to cook shrimp in a wokThe bowl-shaped design of a wok is what allows it to distribute heat evenly. This shape also helps you keep food in the pan when you toss it during stir-frying. You don’t have to use as much oil when you are cooking with a wok, in contrast to a frying pan, because of its unique shape.

You can use a wok to prepare shrimp on its own or simple, delicious shrimp stir-fry.

How to Cook Shrimp in a Wok

Step 1

If you bought whole shrimp, with the legs and tails still attached, start by peeling and deveining the shrimp. Place your fingers along the spine of the shrimp, at the top, and peel off the shell and legs. Use a pairing knife to scoop out the black vein on the back. Grab the tail and firmly pull it off.

Step 2

Place your wok on the stove over medium-high heat. Pour in 1 tablespoon of oil. Pick up the wok with the handle and gently shake it to make the oil swish around so that it covers the inside.

Step 3

Add the shrimp to the wok along with any vegetables that take longer to cook such as carrots and bell peppers. Pour a sauce of your choice on top. Cook until the shrimp is pink (about 2-3 minutes).

Step 4

Add in any additional vegetables and seasoning. Cook for another 1-2 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and the shrimp is cooked through.
